What is Dry Eye?

Dry eye occurs when your tears aren’t able to properly lubricate and moisturize your eye. Your eyes are either not producing enough tears (aqueous deficient dry eye) or there is not enough oil in your tears to prevent them from evaporating (evaporative dry eye).

Dry eye disease can occur for many reasons. Some common causes include:

  • Aging
  • Allergies
  • Meibomian gland dysfunction
  • Certain medications including antihistamines and decongestants
  • Certain medical conditions such as thyroid disorders, lupus, and Sjogren’s syndrome
  • Low blink rate activities such as reading, driving, or computer/screen use
  • Environmental factors such as smoke, wind, and dry air

Treatments We Offer

Our team can create a treatment plan unique to your dry eye symptoms and needs. We offer a variety of treatments to bring you back to a state of comfort. Our goal is to provide you with your best vision and overall eye health.

iLux is a device used to treat meibomian gland dysfunction, which affects the amount of oil in your tears. It’s a quick and easy treatment that takes around 8–12 minutes to perform.

The system works by warming the eyelids with an LED light to melt oil blockages in the meibomian glands. Proper function of the meibomian glands helps alleviate dry eye symptoms.

The Bruder Moist Heat Eye Compress is designed to help open up oil glands in the eyelid and allow the natural oils to flow back into your eyes. This helps decrease how quickly your tears evaporate.

The mask is easy to use—all you need to do is microwave it for 20–25 seconds and apply it for 8–10 minutes.

The Dry Eye Mask by Wizard Research is a solution for blepharitis, meibomian gland dysfunction, and chronic dry eye.

This eye mask produces constant heat to gently and effectively melt thick oil clogging the meibomian glands. Once melted, oil is able to flow easily through the glands and back onto the eye’s surfaces, preventing your tears from evaporating too quickly.

Hyabak is a preservative-free eye drop formulated to hydrate and lubricate the surface of your eye. It can be used to treat moderate to severe dry eye symptoms and can be used with different types of contacts.

Thealoz Duo is a preservative-free eye drop that not only hydrates your eye, but protects it as well. The ingredient trehalose protects cells on your eyes surface to improve dry eye symptoms. It can also be used with different types of contacts.

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fats necessary for overall health. Your body doesn’t produce these essential fats itself so it’s important you consume it from external sources.

I-VU omega-3 is a supplement to help you get your daily dose. Omega-3 has been shown to help decrease inflammation and increase tear production to reduce dry eye symptoms.

As part of our dry eye evaluation, we use meibomian gland imaging to map the oil glands in your eyes. This helps us determine if they are healthy and functioning to the best of their ability. By gathering this information, we are able to customize a treatment plan for you.

The tear film is made up of 3 layers: a watery layer, an oily layer, and a mucus layer. Each layer has an important function. The oily layer is responsible for making sure your tears don’t evaporate too quickly. We are able to video map your tear film to understand evaporation patterns and provide therapy based on your needs.
